Like all other domesticated animals, bunnies need quality sustenance to grow well and stay healthy. If you’re wondering, “What do rabbits eat?”, this guide’s got you covered.

Keep reading to learn more about the nutritional requirements of rabbits.

Hay: The Foundation of a Healthy Rabbit Diet

Hay is the cornerstone of a rabbit diet. High-quality grass hay, such as timothy, orchard grass, or meadow hay, should make up the majority of their daily food intake.

Hay is rich in fiber, which is essential for maintaining good digestive health in rabbits. It aids in proper dental wear, prevents hairballs, and reduces the risk of obesity. Offer unlimited access to fresh, clean hay to ensure your rabbit always has something to chew on.

Fresh Vegetables: A Colorful Addition to the Diet

Besides hay, rabbits need a variety of fresh vegetables to meet their nutritional needs. Leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, spinach, kale, and cilantro are excellent choices.

Introduce new vegetables gradually to avoid digestive upset, and observe your rabbit’s response. Each day, provide about two cups of fresh vegetables per six pounds of body weight.

Remember to wash the vegetables thoroughly. Also, remove any uneaten portions to prevent spoilage.

Pellets: Moderation is Key

Commercial rabbit food pellets can be a convenient addition to your rabbit’s diet. But they should not be the primary source of nutrition.

Choose high-quality pellets that are specifically formulated for rabbits. It should be free from added sugars and artificial ingredients.

Feed your rabbit about 1/4 cup of pellets per six pounds of body weight daily. Adjust the amount based on your rabbit’s individual needs. This will ensure they maintain a healthy weight.

Water: Hydration Matters

Fresh, clean water is essential for your rabbit’s overall well-being. Provide a constant supply of water in a clean, sturdy water bottle or bowl.

Regularly check and refill the water to ensure it is always available. Keep in mind that rabbits may prefer a water bottle over a bowl. This minimizes the risk of contamination and spillage.

Treats: Occasional Indulgences

Treats can be a delightful way to bond with your rabbit, but you should give them sparingly. You can offer fresh fruits, such as apples, berries, and melons as an occasional treat.

Remember that fruits are high in sugar. So, limit them to small portions, around one or two tablespoons per day.

Avoid feeding rabbits chocolate, sugary treats, or anything toxic to their system. To be sure of what’s toxic to them, you can read all about rabbits here.
